#TBT THE FOOD TRUCK

Back in 2016, Curcuma began with a simple mission: to spread the idea that food is medicine through our menu of healthy and delicious plant-based meals & superfood lattes.

We believe that everyone feels better when they eat more plants!  So Chef Rachel Musquiz created a menu that was vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and friendly for those on a Whole 30 or Paleo diet. We used nutrient-dense, ethically sourced, plant-based ingredients, and make sustainable decisions when it comes to all aspects of our operations. Sounds simple, right? At the time, there weren't any healthy plant-based options. We drew a line in the sand & committed to these values making way for more food trucks, restaurants & products to emerge in the Austin scene.

We brought a modern approach to the ancient healing traditions that use food as medicine. Inspired by Ayurveda, Curcuma started by offering delicious, healthy plant-based meals and superfood drinks from our food trailer in Austin. We served up Austin's First Golden Mylk, and our customers began asking how they could make this up. We simply put our blend into a mason jar & started selling it from the truck, the Farmers Market, pop-up markets, and local retailers. We now sell our Golden Turmeric to 30+ cafés who proudly serve Curcuma Golden Mylk. (contact us here if you’re interested in carrying it!)

WHY WE CLOSED

In October 2020, I shared on Instagram that our business was struggling. Immediately, we saw an incredible reaction with support, and that made it possible to keep operating business in the short term. Our biggest month of 2020 allowed me to step back & decide how or if I'll keep the food truck open long term. When I set out to create Curcuma, it always felt like more than just a food truck-- it's community, its connection, its a lifestyle. I wanted to share my passion for healing through food and a 14 foot trailer was an extremely successful first step in spreading this message.

Closing the windows during quarantine was one the most difficult things I've ever done. All the plans I had for the future became irrelevant overnight, and I went into survival mode. I was forced to consider what life would look like if I didn't reopen. I poured my self into developing a whole line of Ayurvedic inspired products, offering education through our seasonal Kitchari Cleanse, and exploring new ways of sharing the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda & herbalism that has so deeply impacted my life. We're still in an ooey gooey metamorphis, but I hope you'll stick around to see our full transformation!
